2011

I personally find the following post theraputic- i look back on what i've learned,did and accomplished in the year gone. Something i usually do when i'm walking my dog. I debate with the little voices in my head which i find it helpfull to avoid fighting and tensions. So here goes my year!
2011 was the year:
-I became active in the tweetniverse
-I started cooking lessons
-Became active in animal protection and voiced my opinion for the need of the well being of animals
-I became an i-gadget freak with the purchase of an ipod touch 3G (4th gen) and iphone 4S within 5 months
-I got a raise and at the same time became incapable of saving some of that money
-I really enjoyed Pop music thanx to Adele
-Decided i really dislike Rihanna's whole look & Angelina Jolie- team Aniston won me over
-I started blogging
- I visited for the first time a dog shelter and tried really hard not to get any of the dogs there- my dog is a very jealous monkey baby; she hates sharing her mommy
-I cut ties with people i disliked; no need to keep them around anymore
-Decided i would rather spending time hanging out with my dog rather than be out all night partying
-I understood why people hate the IR so much; it took MY money too :(
-I tried watching a lot of series.Other than Modern Family i dont find my self that interested
-Charlie Sheen quite "two and a half men" and completely destroyed my favourite series!Chuck Lorre i blame you for this crap of series you have going on now!
-I took my parents out to posh/expensive restaurants and i picked up the tab ( best feeling in the world)
-i turned 27 and still feeling like i'm 20. Thinking of when i was in my pre-teens and believed that 25 is a huge number and a grown up number. yup... grown up!THATS the word most use to describe me!!
-I travelled around Europe: Berlin, Bologna, Milan, Venice

Here's to hoping 2012 will be an even better year

Κωφά αυτιά και όχι κωφή καρδιά

Η κώφωση αναφέρεται στην έλλειψη ή την απώλεια της ικανότητας του ζώου να ακούει ενώ μπορεί να είναι ειτε μερική είτε ολική.  Εαν ο σκύλος σας είναι εκ γενετής κωφός τότε το σκυλάκι σας θα ανατραφεί στην νοηματική γλώσσα. Διαβάζοντας για την κώφωση στα ζώα αντιλήφθηκα ότι η κώφωση ως ασθένεια δεν διαφέρει και πολύ από την κώφωση που παρατηρείτε στο ανθρώπινο γένος. Ως κάτοχος πτυχίου διερμηνείας τησ νοηματικής γλώσσας από το κέντρο βορείου ελλάδος είδα από πρώτο χέρι το πώς ένας κωφός αντιλαμβάνεται τον κόσμο και πώς ζει μια κανονική ζωή με μόνη διαφορά ότι η ακοή του είναι μειωμένη. Και αν η ίδια η βλάβη στα ακουστικά νεύρα δεν κάνει διακρίσεις στο είδος της βλάβης τότε ποιός ο λόγος να κάνουμε εμείς την διάκριση στο αν ένα κωφό ζώο έχει δικαίωμα ή όχι στην ζωή;
Περισσότερες από 30 ράτσες σκύλων είναι κυρίως επιρρεπή  στην απώλεια της ακοής, μεταξύ των οποίων Boston terrier, Australian shepherd, Dalmatian, German shepherd, Jack russel, Maltese, poodles και West Highland white terrier. Σε γενικες γραμμές, τα ζώα όπως και οι άνθρωποι τείνουν να χάνουν ένα σημαντικό μέρος της ακοής τους σε μεγάλη ηλικία π.χ εαν ο σκύλος σας διανύει την έβδομη δεκαετία της ζωής του (10 χρονων περίπου) καλό θα ήταν να βρίσκεται σε ήρεμη κατάσταση και να του παρέχεται πολλή φροντίδα και κατανόηση, όπως ακριβώς θα συμπεριφερόσασταν στον παπού ή την γιαγιά σας. Εαν το σκυλί σας δεν υπακούσει από την πρώτη φορά στην υποδείξή σας να κάνει κάτι τότε είναι γιατί πολύ πιθανόν να δυσκολεύεται να ακούσει τι του λέτε. Προσπαθήστε με κινήσεις των χεριών σας ή με ένα χάδι να του τραβήξετε την προσοχή και επαναλάβετε την εντολή σας.
Τα συμπτώματα για την απώλεια της ακοής είναι τα ακόλουθα:
-απάθεια στους καθημερινούς ήχους
-μη ανταπόκριση στο άκουσμα του ονόματός του
-μη ανταπόκριση στους ήχους των παιχνιδιών του
-μη εγερσής του από τον ύπνο του στο άκουσμα ενός πολύ δυνατού ήχου

Εξίσου πολλοί είναι και οι λόγοι για τους οποίους μπορεί να στοιχήσει την ακοή σε ενα ζώο.
Η Αγωγιμότητα όπως την αποκαλούν επιστημονικά είναι όταν τα ηχητικά κύματα δεν φτάνουν στα νεύρα που βρίσκονται εντός του αυτιού. Η Αγωγιμότητα μπορεί να προκύψει  από μια φλεγμονή στο εξωτερικό αυτί ή άλλου είδους εξωτερικής μόλυνσης που να μην επιτρέπει το πέρασμα του ήχου από το ωστικό κανάλι για παράδειγμα ο σκύλος μπορεί να έχει καταστραμμένο τύμπανο ή η παρουσία όγκου να στενεύει το ωστικό κανάλι. Μια φλεγμονή στο μεσαίο αυτί γνωστή και ως η ασθένεια "Otitis externa" η οποία προκαλείτε όταν υπάρχει μεγάλη αλλαγή στο κανονικό περιβάλλον του ακουστικού καναλιού με αποτέλεσμα την μεγένθυση των αδενών που ευθυγραμμίζουν το κανάλι ενώ δημιουργείται υπερβολικό κερί.
Τα Νευρα και η βλάβη  στο νευρικό σύστημα είναι ένας άλλος λόγος κώφωσης. Οι εκφυλιστικές αλλοιώσεις των νευρών σε ηλικιωμένους σκύλους είναι ένα σύνηθες φαινόμενο αφού τα γηρατία δεν διαλέγουν ποια από τις αισθήσεις μας θα πρωτοκτυπηθεί. Οι ανατομικές διαταραχές δηλαδή η μη ανάπτυξη του μέρους αυτού του αυτιού που περιλαμβάνει τους υποδοχείς νευρών που χρησιμοποιούνται για την ακοή. Η κατάσταση αυτή οδηγεί στην δημιουργία υγρών σε συγκεκριμένες περιοχές του εγκεφάλου και στην κάκωση των εγκεφαλικών κυτάρων που αφορούν την ακοή.  Η ύπαρξη ενός όγκου είναι ακριβώς όσο ανησυχητικη όσο ακούγεται αφού συνεχώς αθξάνεται το ποσοστό των σκύλων που πάσχουν από διάφορα είδη καρκινώματος με κύριο σύμπτωμα την έντονη ανησυχια και την κώφωση.
Όπως ανέφερα και πριν, λόγω ανάμειξής μου στο Συλλογο Προστασίας Κωφλων Β. Ελλάδος, έμαθα ότι ένας κωφός δεν γεννιέται απαραιτήτως κωφός. Γινεται κωφός μετά σοβαρή αρρώστια ή και με την χρήση δυνατών φαρμάκων ή αντιβίωσης. Κάπως έτσι παράλληλα μπορεί ένα ζώο να χασει την ακοή του με λίγες πιθανότητες επαναφοράς του επιπέδου ακοής στο αρχικό.

Ένα σκυλάκι που γεννιέται κωφό θα μάθει να περπατά όπως περπατά και η μητέρα του και τα αδέρφια του. Ενα κωφό σκυλλάκι θα κάνει τις ίδιες αταξίες με ένα μη κωφό σκυλλακι. Ένα κωφό σκυλάκι θα κυνηγήσει με το ίδιο πάθος ένα γάτο, μια μπάλα, ένα πουλί. Ένα κωφό σκυλακι θέλει να αγαπηθεί εξίσου το ίδιο με όλους μας. Ποιός είσαι εσύ που θα του στερήσεις το δικαίωμα στην ζωή;

Thousands of deaf puppies are born each year. Many become deafer as a result of age, illness, trauma or drug reaction. So far the facts are not that different from the reasons as to why humans are born or become deaf but while humans whether deaf, blind or handicapped are gradually integrated into the society deaf, blind or handicapped animals are routinely destroyed because they are rumoured to be brain damaged, aggressive and untrainable or simply because their quality of life is believed to be somehow diminished. Humans tend to forget that animals experience the world through their nose (primarily) then their eyes and then with their ears. As humans we often rely on sound but nobody asked a deaf person how they experience the world. It has been named as the silent world but to them it’s no different than ours. Their world entails more details, more emotion and no fake feelings. Deaf animals are exactly the same. They sense the vibe and energy around everyone and read into it and act accordingly. So what if YOUR dog is deaf?

A person with a deaf dog has a great opportunity to communicate with their dog as the animal they are. Dogs communicate through energy and body language. For example you cannot be smiling and trying to teach your dog to behave as the dog will get the wrong signal for when he is bad.

To housetrain a deaf dog you may use hand signals, energy and most importantly body language to communicate your instruction (sit, down, lay down etc  etc). I will not go on saying how easy it is because it’s not. But it’s not that different from housetraining your non deaf dog. The important lesson your deaf dog will teach you will be to be in tune with YOUR emotions and more importantly learn to control your anxiety and stress. Like a new-born baby learning to go to the toilet instead of wearing a diaper; it takes time and effort and there is no reason to think that a dog being housetrain is any different; deaf, blind or neither. As all living beings on this planet, everyday routine get to be a routine through the course of time and not from day 1 to day 2.

We should always remember that when a living being is born without one of his senses cannot miss what it did not know in the first place so we should not treat them any differently. Missing one sense does not make one less worthy to be loved and cared for. On the contrary it makes them even more vulnerable and in need of guidance to face the world. Deaf beings have a more accurate scent and definitely more accurate sight. They rely on their eyes and nose to feel the world and understand the commands they are given. For example; my dog a 2year old female Labrador (the love of my life) while she has all her 5 senses she just cannot cross the road as she does not feel the danger of cars. I have to instruct her not to move until I move to cross the street. And I cannot see the difference with a deaf or a blind dog. I would say a deaf dog would pay attention to the fact that we cross the street when the cars are not moving while a blind dog would take the noise as a sign to stop.
